Janet Jackson merilis album keenam bertajuk The Velvet Rope pada tahun 1997 silam. Lagu Together Again menjadi salah satu single andalan. 

Lagu tersebut diproduksi oleh Janet Jackson, Jimmy Jam, dan Terry Lewis. Rene Elizondo Jr mantan suami Janet turut menyumbang kontribusi. 

Awalnya Together Again ditulis sebagai lagu balada, tetapi  diaransemen ulang sebagai lagu dance uptempo.

Jackson terinspirasi untuk menulis lagu melalui penemuan pribadinya tentang kehilangan seorang teman karena AIDS.

Sebuah surat dari penggemar Inggris yang kehilangan ayahnya juga menjadi inspirasi Janet.
